Where To Start
I had a member of the Survival Punks Facebook group ask for a resource list. She had to move after a house fire and lost her preps. This will be a good post for those asking where to start.
Remembering where all the survival resources online are located is hard without them being bookmarked. And a google search will often turn up fly by night scam jobs.
The resources listed on this post are ones I have used and personally recommend. So no worries about being ripped off.
Deep Pantry
I would be remiss in any food storage talk without mentioning having a deep pantry. Anyone who has been prepping for a while knows this. But for those wanting to know where to start this is it.
A deep pantry is made by copy canning. To do copy canning you buy an extra nonpreishable item.
So you go to the store and go through 1 bag of coffee every 2 weeks. Now you buy two bags. Next time you do the same. Soon you have several extra bags of coffee.
Then you move on to another item. And do the same. In six months you’ll have built up a respectable pantry.
Local Long Term Storage
You can begin building up your long term storage locally. And no I don’t mean to stock up on mountain house camping meals.
Most grocery stores carry a 25# bag of rice for under $20. Usually under $15.
Try to look around for a bulk store. In Nashville, we have the cash N Carry Store. They are bulk and restaurant supply store.
You can get great deals on huge packages. I used to get 50# bags of rice from them.
You can also get big bags of dried beans locally as well.
Putting rice and beans in five-gallon buckets and seal them. They will last longer than you that way.
Look for a local Mormon LDS Cannery. At them, you can buy a lot of long terms storage foods and can them there.
Online Long Term Storage
I’ll list a few of the places I trust to get long term storage foods online. There are more. You can look around but I trust and use these ones.
With Thirvelife they have a Q program that will send you things you pick monthly. I really like the convenience of the Q program
Medical Supplies And Kits
I have always liked to build my medical kits myself and from local items. I did a big post on building your own first aid kits Here Level 1 First Aid Kit and Here Level II Medical Kit.
Almost all the items in those kits are locally sourced.
For hard to find items you can check the following.
Also, Doctor Bones And Nurse Amy have kits and the best Survival Medicine handbook on the market.
Amazon and Ebay are both good sources for medical equipment too.
Conclusion
I hope that this helps with Where To start prepping at. Mike and I have covered this topic in many episodes of the Survival Punk Survival podcast.
No, it’s not a complete guide to everything there is to know about prepping. But it’s a good start. And Like everything, You can add to this. Comment below where you get your preps.
