Storing Milk: Why Bother

I received an email recently with the subject “Why Milk is essential to Stock up on for emergencies”. I knew I would be writing about that. I saved the email to read later. I disagreed with the premise that you must store milk. I don’t believe it is essential nor healthy. I later opened the email to see if I could be persuaded. It was one tiny paragraph. Summarized as Milk has protein and you need protein. Mostly they were trying to sell non fat powdered milk. Nope not interested in storing milk. Now that we have that out of the way let’s dig into why you shouldn’t bother  storing milk.

Milk And Disease

I follow a paleo diet and a core tenet is no diary. I do bend this rule. I am ok with high fat dairy products. Heavy cream, grass fed butter and cheese. I’m not storing milk though.  Some more militant in the paleo community say no dairy. They back this up with research papers on dairy causing a host of diseases. The biggest one being diabetes It seems to be aggravated by those suffering from ba gut health. Having leaky gut syndrome and consuming dairy can contribute to many autoimmune diseases.  Theres also some evidence of the growth hormone milk not being good for us and especially not for children. In addition to the major ailments many, myself included, are lactose intolerant. That being the main reason I gave up milk.

Storing Milk

I restate my belief in why bother storing milk? I’ve not drank regular milk in probably 10 years. Originally because of being lactose intolerant and not liking the taste. The only exception to that is the half-gallon of raw milk I bought. Which did not give me any issues or have a bad taste. I know some people do a lot of cooking with it. Or eat it with cereal. I’ve not found anything that calls for milk that can’t be made with a healthier option. Coconut Milk, Almond milk or heavy cream. On the cereal toss that crap out. Kids like it cause it’s loaded with sugar that’s contributing to them getting type II diabetes For adults you’re being lazy. And possible sugar addicted. Wake you’re ass up and make a proper breakfast. No need to be storing milk. I store some canned coconut milk. Much better for you and more cost effective.

If you are going to be drinking milk at least go with raw milk. It is a whole food. It could be beneficial to health. You are not going to be storing milk in the raw though. The half gallon I got went bad before I could finish it. Only using a bit in my morning coffee wasn’t enough.

    1. Heavy cream is almost pure fat and less of the proteins. The issue is the proteins getting into the blood stream through gut permiability. That’s less an issue with heavy cream.
