Paleo Meals To Go: Mountain Beef Stew

Often I get spam on my site in the comments linking to various websites. Rarely though it turns out to not be spam and comes from legit sources. I always like to go check out any links posted and make sure it’s something I like. I had an old article about making your own paleo camping meals that got a comment recently about a company finally making freeze dried paleo camping meals. Holding back my excitement was pretty darn hard. After looking over the site I decided to contact them and see if they wold like to send me a delicious sample to review. They did and today I’ll be doing just that.

Paleo To Go

Paleo Meals To Go is based out of Denver by an avid Crossfit athlete and an Ultra marathon runner both of whom are Paleo eaters  and outdoors enthusiasts. They both realized as many of us do that remaining paleo while on adventures can e tricky. They saw the market for a purpose built paleo backpacking meal and Paleo Meals to go was born. At this time they have three offerings, COCONUT BERRY BREAKFAST , SAVORY CHICKEN & VEGETABLES and Beef Mountain Stew.

Ingredients

One of the biggest things that impressed me about these meals was the lack of ingredients. Looking at the back of a Mountain house meal the list is a mile long and filled with unpronounceable items. beef, carrots, onions, green onions, celery, garlic, asparagus, mushrooms, garlic, thyme, marjoram, and black pepper with Celtic sea salt in a separate package. That’s it, all the ingredients are food. Finally a freeze dried meal with ingredients I can agree with.

Beef Stew

So lets cook this stew and see how it taste. Cooking is no different than any other freeze dried meal. In this case boil 1 1/4 cup of water then pour into the pouch. Stir it up and let it sit for 5~6 minutes. I actually put in 1 1/2 cups of water which gave me a little extra broth in it. After the six minutes it was well re-hydrated and I dug in. The texture came out a little gritty an issue I’ve always had with freeze dried foods. The flavor though made up for it. I am a salt a holic and used both packages of sea salt. I tried it without the salt ad it was tasty but I love salt and after using it the stew became down right yummy. The extra broth in the bottom I thought was a good addition I would suggest adding the extra water.

Getting Them

Being a small company and using quality ingredients adds up and that means you will have to pay for quality. Each meal cost $12.99 which is just about twice as much as mountain house. Y0u can save a few bucks and get the Nomad bundle which comes with three meals for $34.99. I’m wiling to pay the extra to have quality meals that taste a million times better than wise food. I’m also sure once they get some distributors and the volume goes up they will be able to lower the price.

The Bad

I only have one complaint about the beef stew. It made me gassy. Not sure what it was, I’m leaning towards the green onion though. It may have been a combination of also having some dairy that morning too though. I am planing on picking up one of the bundles and taking them on an overnite trip.
