Gun Prices and Ammo Shortages

After a few interactions last night, some observation and some quick “googling” to confirm, I think It’s time for a good old fashioned rant. Expect there to be some potty mouth language used. It is called for in this case. Some of my rage is from misinformation and some is for overreacting. Most though is aimed directly at those that use tragedy to cause more tragedy. I hope your in the mood for a rant cause that’s what you have in store. Now lets get down to the bitching.

Customer Worries!

Last night at work there were multiple pages for help at the sporting goods counter. Having a set of keys myself I went to see if I could go help the customer out. As it turns out I couldn’t. He was looking for some  ammunition. I turned and looked at the case and was startled at how empty it was. There was only a few boxes left of unpopular calibers. If I remember correctly we had .357, 22 mag, 17 HMR, .40 , .45 long colt, .22-250 and I think 243 Winchester. Yes so little left I can actually remember all of them. The guy was looking for some .22 Long Rifle, which I have never seen a shortage of before. Not even when Obama first took office and we had the long running ammo shortage was I unable to find .22 ammo. Me and the guy started chatting a bit and he had heard some wild stories recently.

Tin Foil Hat

Rumors Rumors!

This guy had heard some doozies. First he stated that gun’s were going to jump up in price by $200~$300 at midnight. I scoured the internet looking for any reference to this and could not find any. Nothing fixed anyway. Gun prices are going through the roof right now. Due to people buying them up like there’s no tomorrow. From dropping in on Gunbroker and some trading groups It looks like many are doing this just to re-sale them higher. One fucking idiot I saw was bragging and advertising he had two PMAGS on GunBroker for $75 for both. $75 for two blobs of fucking plastic! I wanted to tell him where he could insert those mags. I can’t stand this sort of behavior, of taking advantage of a situation to fuck people over. I myself, have been looking for 2 PMAGS for personal use for upcoming training classes. I was not going to pay some asshole a ton of money though, I would invent a cardboard disposable magazine first. Try me and see. Luckily one of my readers saw my issue and offered to sale me some at a fair price. The other rumor this guy had heard was that there’s talk to make ammunition and gun powder that has short expiration dates. Yes ammo that will expire, on purpose, and be worthless to prevent stockpiling. I also vetted this on the internet and the closest thing I found was ammo limits to prevent stockpiling. So please check on the things you hear. There is so much bullshit flying around now we need to keep a calm head and not be dicks.

Low on Ammo!

This is exactly what happened in 2008 and continued for a long time. The gun community bought more ammunition than  the companies could keep up with. The shortage of ammo is created by us. I remember how bad it sucked then to find ammo. I’m not looking forward to it again. Yes I have some ammo. Is it enough? Well can you really ever have enough? I usually don’t have too much on hand because I train often. If I have a few hundred rounds of .223 I go to the range. Becoming and maintaining firearms proficiency requires plenty of range time and I can’t afford to buy a thousand rounds just to keep in storage. I slowly build it up. I usually grab a box or two when I head to the range. Hopefully this time it’s not a long lasting ammo drought. The only good from this is I’ve finally decided to take up reloading. Components are easier to get and cheaper anyway.

Were in this together

In closing I just want to say that as we gun enthusiast are under attack from the media and politicians the last thing we need to be doing is fucking each other over to make a few bucks. Yes buy a few extra by all means. Do you really need two cases of PMAGS? Do you really think it’s wise to max out your credit card on a million rounds of ammo. Your not helping anyone. We should fight harder the politicians who are wrong. Stricter gun control will only do us more harm. Criminals break the laws by definition. An unarmed weak citizenship is at the whim of those that break laws and create them. Instead of hoarding we need to stop this bill dead in it’s tracks! Gun control equals people control.

Have you heard any of this? What do the ammo stores look like in your area? Let me know in the comments!

  1. This is how free markets work. We have all been adequately warned to prepare. Those who have been preparing already have enough ammo. Imagine what the values will go to after SHTF.

An increase in demand can create new suppliers who see an opportunity. I will get more ammo when the prices become reasonable again.

  2. Yeah, the ammo and spare magazine shelves are bare at every gun shop and hunting/outdoors outfitter I’ve been to in the Waco, Texas area. I’m with Hank on this one. People are scared and they are preparing for war against the now completely corrupted US government. God help us all if such a thing should come to pass. DHS and all of the other myriad alphabet soup agencies have been stockpiling ammo, guns, and riot gear supplies for the last 2 years. I didn’t want to believe it, but it seems to me that they have had gun confiscation in mind from day one of Obama’s first term, and they’ve been busy pre-positioning all of their “assets” in anticipation of the severe backlash that they will receive from patriotic Americans once their unconstitutional anti-gun laws are passed.

    1. Obama came right out and said that’s exactly what he was going to do before he even took office. He had Biden and everybody else around him hemming and hawing. Yes, even Biden.

This time around, he said he didn’t feel we needed more gun legislation just more enforcement. Interestingly enough, 4 months later a news story breaks and that’s out the window.

I hate that we’re having a shortage, but… thems the breaks.

  3. Hank, I fear that you are precisely correct. I hoped that folks would have exercised more reasoned, proactive options such as passively “standing down” from essentially everything for an indeterminate period of time: including not going to work (won’t fire everyone), buying (bartering for) things from anyone other than “Mom and Pop” in their local communities, and essentially refusing to participate within the fraudulent and corrupt “systems.” In short, staying at home!

I believe this is the true power that people have; several days of this (with a good level of participation) and the entire economy would come to a screeching halt. After all, the salient question is “cui bono?” That’s always the common denominator on which all western, systemic behavior is based. Take that “benefit” (profit) away from the equation and suddenly the power shifts.

Perhaps this is the most powerful capability of “Preppers” that they don’t even realize they have? They, and others of like mind, actually hold the key to manifesting a complete power shift by their simple withdrawal from the system.

Would things be challenging during the ensuing down-turn? Of course they would. Indications are that they’re ultimately going to be bad anyway, so here’s the real question: Under whose terms do you want to experience a significant turn-down? Yours or theirs? And, if one is looking for a painless solution then I fear s/he is greatly self-deluded.

But, back to the original thread: Yes, my sense is that people are preparing for hostilities; which, in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing assuming that people will adhere to The Non-Aggression Principle and only act in self-defense. After all, that preparation lay at the heart of the original founding principles. The real caution here is to be very careful to NOT repeat history and to NOT be manipulated into creating a “casus belli” as a justification for a violent, governmental clampdown.

  4. I wonder how many of these “panic” buyers have done something intelligent and taken the time to write their state reps? This should be one of the first moves. 2.8 million background checks were run buy the FBI in December alone. If everyone of these buyers contacted their reps, it would be a resounding voice in DC. If you are a firearm enthusiast and haven’t, do it now!

  5. Same boat on mags for my glock in CO. Need 1-2 more to have enough for training properly. Couldn’t find any locally in early dec (strange). Then i couldn’t find any in the metro area(wierd). Then none online, or way overpriced(uh oh). Was travelling to WA state for holidays, thought I would check some places there, surely a highly democratic state like that wouldn’t be out.(what the shit?). I got laughed at twice like, “yeah right, a glock 19 mag, ha”. The Cabelas in Olympia had good-priced 223, didn’t need to spend on shipping home though. No mags, but the massive gun counter had a frenzy of about 80 people, they were taking numbers for background check and sales attention, was nuts at about 10am.

Cause? Prob fear. Solution? Wait, no other option till free market works itself out.

  6. It goes to show you responsible gun owners have plenty of enemies some of which claim to be on our side. The price gouging was bound to happen. Honestly I wouldn’t sell my p mags for 13 bucks a piece right now. But then again I’m not in the p mag business’s. The mad dash for all things firearms is going to destroy the mom and pop gun stores as replenishing their stocks is going to be nearly impossible as distributors are slammed. For gun stores it’s going to be a laugh now cry later situation if things don’t simmer down within the next few months.

  7. It is ridiculous that when I went to bass pro last weekend I was only lucky enough to be able to buy 2 25 round boxes of 9mm self defense rounds and only because some guy who was looking to hoard 115gr rounds put them back on the shelf because the self defense bullets were too expensive for him. I’m just glad that several weeks ago I picked up a 500rd ammo can of 147fmj 9mm for target practice before the prices got jacked up. Personally I suspect that a lot of gun dealers are the ones who are buying all the ammo around town in all the Walmart just so they can sell it for twice the price at the gun shows. I thought it was just silly that Walmart only had 7 5rd boxes of 12ga 00 buckshot left and one box of slugs. When I go to the gunshow this weekend (not looking for ammo or ar15) I’ll know for sure when I see Walmart price stickers on the boxes.

  8. Yeah, it’s pretty bad here in Shreveport,Louisiana. All of the pawn shops pretty much added a thousand dollars to every so called “assault rifle” they have. They also sell .223/5.56 for 20.00$ a box when it’s normall 5-10. I guess it’s just business but I don’t have to like it. The big stores are sold out whenever it’s put on shelves and people are even buying out all the reload supplies. It’s an utter mad house down here.

    1. People are retarded. I find just the opposite, I stopped buying anything firearms related. I’ll just wait until the moron sheep are done and prices drop. There will always be ammo let the retards buy high the they will be stuck with overpriced bullets while we are all buying dirt cheap. DON’T GIVE IN TO THE HYPE IT ONLY FEEDS IT.

  9. 3 walmarts, cabelas are out of .45 fmj in Maine
I did find a 250rd ct box at walmart but the cashier asked for my drivers license saying it was a residence check as MA people need to show another form to buy ammo??! I walked out…

  10. Anything other than .243, 7mm, 30-30, and 22 short is long gone around here. Palmetto State Armory has managed to keep some ammo in stock in Columbia. They were out of 5.56, but had 7.62x39mm in stock. They aren’t gouging either. I’ve got a rainy day supply of ammo, but it’s not anywhere near where I would like it to be. I refuse to pay $1.00 a round for 5.56; I’ll wait until it drops first.
    What class are you taking??

  11. Pay attention to the politics!!!
Or don’t be surprised when it’s too late..
The plan is to make it a felony to own certain guns and make you come in and file papers on what you already have. Then make it a felony for your family to retain ownership of the firearm after you die. Yes the bill is already ready in the works.
So buy all the ammo you wish but unless you get involved you will soon be a felon or a Insurgent as they like to say.
Our choice. Vote, fight or submit.

    1. Lynn I agree with on a few points. Paying attention to get stocked up is a good idea. Getting involved and being vocal about our second amendment rights is great. This bill will never pass though. Too many gun owner’s to allow it. It would spark riots so quick. I personally will not be giving up anything anytime

  12. I never thought I would find so many stores out of ammo. Who is buying up all of it? This seems a good way for the antis to stop us from practicing and using our firearms.

  13. I was at gander mountian last month and they got in 8 ar rifles and 223 ammo and ar clips ,it looked like a bunch of women at a blue light at k-mart.You would think we are under attack, you can’t even buy a 22 long rifle bullet because of these idiot like I saw at gander mountian. They are not after 22 ammo so what up with that!
