Blackouts

This week we talk all about blackouts. With the recent storms and blackouts I thought we should talk prepping for the power going out.

We cover batteries for storage. My hierarchy of batteries. With rechargeables being the first line of defense. Eneloop being the best rechargeables you can get. With Energizer Lithium as your reliable emergency batteries. Lastly always stock up on cheap junk batteries. Use them if your rechargeables are not charged and it’s not an emergency. Remember two is one and one is none.

We cover flashlights, candles, battery backups and much more.

  1. I can vouch for the Eneloop batteries, they have been solid for me. I have also tried quite a few other brands of rechargeable batteries. The Energizer, Duracell, and Procell rechargeables seem to be OK, but the Harbor Freight and Rayovac seem to be junk. I would also like to point out the battery charger itself is just as important as the batteries. I really like the La Crosse BC500, it smart charges to improve the lifespan of the batteries, has LCD readouts for each batteries status, can condition the batteries, and most importantly it comes with both an AC and DC cable, so you can charge your AA and AAA off anything. As far as the dollar tree batteries go, it’s better to get the 4 pack of alkalines instead of the eight pack of “heavy duty” batteries. Look online to see how bad the non alkaline really are.
