Geocaching – A Cacher’s Overview

Today I have a guest post from a friend and former co-worker that escaped the madness. John left with his family and went further south and started blog. I asked him to do this guest post over a year ago and It is finally here. Enjoy this great write up on the hobby of geocaching. You  can find more at his blog here  -James

In July of 2012, I stumbled across a link to geocaching while looking for a cheap and fun way to celebrate my thirteenth wedding anniversary with my very lovely wife. Cheap was important to us, because we have five children and our finances prohibit many luxuries. On this website, the number one “cheap and fun” thing to do with your date was Geo-Caching. I thought to myself, “What in the world is that?” After some brief research on the subject, I became intrigued. Then after further research, I became very curious. So curious, I went out and found one to see what it was all about.

I spent about 15-20 minutes looking for that hidden thing and thought, “How in the world can this be fun? I can’t find it at all.” Well, I looked at all of the description on the cache, checked out some of the logs from previous cachers that found it, and used this information to discover it. I was forced to be sneaky because it was hidden behind an old sign outside of the Cracker Barrel next to where I worked. I didn’t want folks walking by that don’t know what Geocaching is (the folks are termed “muggles” in Geocaching circles) to think, “What’s that guy doing?” So, I quickly snuck my hand behind the sign and found a magnetic key holder and pulled it out. Inside was a simple log sheet that had dates and names on it. I happily signed my name and the date in the confines of my vehicle, and then quickly replaced it, . Following the directions, I then electronically logged the find in the geocaching system and got my first “smiley”: the term used for finding the cache. After that initial success, I was hooked.

AR15 Weapon Maintenance

Today I have a great guest post by my friend Justin from The Crooked Tree Farm. He was one of the many great folks that reached out to me after my TSP interview. While talking to him one day he mentioned just getting his Armorers cert and I knew that AR15 Maintenance is a subject you guy would love. So without further banter lets get down to the subject today. Take it away Justin

AR15
AR15
Firearms now and for the foreseeable future are an integral part of the self-reliance community.  We rely on them to put food on the table, hone our skills, and defend ourselves from the predators of the world.  One rifle that stands out is the AR-15.  It is known for its ease of use, modularity and effectiveness.   Unlike the military or law enforcement we do not have a staff of professionally trained armorers to keep our weapons running at peak performance, so generally we have to rely on ourselves. For the purpose of this article I’m going to use the generic term AR to cover the AR-15 and its whole family tree of variants.
Before we continue I must say that I feel like the AR has gotten a bad rap regarding reliability.  This is from people spouting a lot of bull about it.  People talk about guns a lot like they talk about the opposite sex.  Simply put there is a lot of smoke and mirrors being passed on as ‘truth’ by guys that have little to no real experience.
Just like all machines, your AR has to be maintained and periodically parts will need to be changed out.  No exact number of rounds fired can be attributed to a component’s failure.  There are too many variables to consider, such as: ammo, quality of the weapons manufacture, exposure to the elements etc.  What we need to be concerned about is assessing the condition of our
weapons and addressing any issues that arise.

Joining The Darkside: How I Got Into Bitcoins

I finally took the plunge and jumped onto the Bitcoin bandwagon. I have been interested in them for a while now and kept putting off getting into them. Part of e kicks myself for now buying some last year when they were going for about $13 a BC. Right now they are trading for over $800. If I got into them purely based on an investment strategy right now would be the completely wrong time. I’m sure that they are going to drop in price soon. No I wanted in them for a myriad of reasons ranging from getting some portion of my money out of Federal Reserve Notes to wanting participate in a growing alternative currency. What I like about BC is that they are being used and used a lot. I have silver but I have never bartered with it. Nor do I know anyone that has. I do know people that use BC regularly. So today’s article will be about the trails and tribulations of setting up a wallet and getting Bitcoins in it.

Picking Up The Art Of Lockpicking

I decided to learn the skill of lock picking. I put off learning after I decided to learn for a pretty long time. I procrastinated buying  a lock pick set and time just slipped by me. Well for my birthday I got a set and have set out to learn how to pick locks. In fact when I got the set I immediately started trying to pick open my door. I failed and got nervous about possibly damaging my lock. I decided I needed something to learn on that would not damage my door lock or that of my family and friends. I got the idea for my lock picking station from a video I saw from ITS Tactical. So today I’ll show you how to build on yourself to start picking safely.

Ceramic Flower Pot Heater

There are a few videos going around the web on heating a room using a Ceramic Flower Pot Heater. Powered by nothing but tea lights. The British video has the presenter saying it costs him 8 pence a day to heat his room. I did the math for you and that comes to .13 cents usd. With claims like that this video is going pretty viral in the survival community. If it turns out to be legit this is a great backup and off grid heat source. I knew I had to put on mythbuster had and give it a go.  I went to the store and got supplies and have been testing for over a week. Today I’ll share the result with you on whether it’s worth it.
