Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

A while back the good folks at Tropical Traditions sent me a jar of coconut oil for review. I have used it a while now. I’m finally ready to do the review. I’ll also go over some reasons why coconut oil is a must have prep.

Fat’s are an often overlooked prep. Many store their beans, rice and wheat. All stores of carbohydrate. Easily storable. Protein has options too. Mountain house meat and beef jerky are options. For fats people usually grab some things of vegetable oil. They might get olive oil on the higher end. Neither are the best option.

Just storing calorie is not enough. You could store nothing but snickers and twinkies. Junk food is cheap and last a long time. Eating it though you will not last a long time. We need to make smarter choices in our food storage. Coconut oil is one easy way to do that.

Curried Cream Of Chicken Soup

Curried Cream Of Chicken Soup

Curried Cream Of Chicken Soup
Curried Cream Of Chicken Soup

I first found this recipe in Dana Carpenders Fat Fast cook book. It was last year when I was looking for high fat recipes. I have tried only a few recipes in that book. Curried cream of chicken soup I make daily during the winter months. It’s so fast and easy. This soup really warms you up. Curried Cream Of Chicken Soup was an important tool in my weight loss. Curried cream of chicken soup is almost 90% fat. With the coconut oil in it getting into and staying in ketosis is easy.

Curried cream of chicken soup is easily modified. The recipe I give is slightly different from Dana’s. You can change it to what you have available. The way I make it is not 100% paleo. You can swap out the butter and heavy cream for more coconut oil and coconut milk if you want. I like the flavors they add though. I’ve added some grated grassfed cheese to the top before and it was amazing. Also garnishing with bacon works. Let’s make a bowl.

Yaupon Holly

Yaupon Holly: Survival Caffeine

Yaupon Holly
Yaupon Holly

The yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria, is something I have wanted to try for years. The yaupon holly is a species of holly tree native to the southeastern parts of the US. Why should you be interested in this holly tree? The berries are not edible. The leaves of the yappon holly have caffeine in them. Did I perk your interest? It is a caffeinated native to North America. You might be storing coffee in your preps. It will only last so long though.

I want sustainable caffeine. When I first found out about the Yaupon holly I knew I wanted some. Being an evergreen it does not drop it’s leaves. It grows in USDA zone 7. Though not native to TN I should have no trouble growing yaupon holly here. With permaculture you could push it further north. Let’s look into the the plant a little more and make some tea.

Pine Bark Bacon

Pine Bark Bacon: Natures Treat

Bacon doesn’t grow on trees. Right? Well maybe it does. I was reading a blog post on Survival Sherpa about uses for pine. It was a list of 13 things you can do with a pine tree. I got to the seventh one and my jaw hit the floor. Pine Bark Bacon. Wait what? Bacon from trees! Have I died and gone to heaven? How have I missed this fact? I knew that the pine tree has many edible parts. I enjoy drinking pine needle tea. I rely on it to keep me from getting colds every year. I also knew the inner bark was edible. I did not know about pine bark bacon though.

I knew the moment I read about pine bark bacon I would be eating it. Soon. Today Dave and I from Dual Homestead were debarking a pine tree. Using brush axes as bark spuds. No safety Sally’s I don’t want to hear about it. They did a great job as bark spuds. The whole time though I wanted a draw knife. Or my trusty Buck Hoodlum. With all the bark removed I peeled some of the inner bark off to bring home I came in the door kicked my boots off and starter frying the pine bark bacon. I was so excited to get to it.

Ingredients Paleo Pancakes

Paleo Pancakes Made Easy

I saw an image on the internet a while back about 2 ingredient pancakes. I don’t care much for recipes. I just went and tried it. Bananas and eggs were the only ingredients. I mashed one banana and mixed with an egg and cooked in a skillet. When I tried to flip over my paleo pancake it fell apart. It looked like a dog got ahold of it.  The paleo pancake was delicious though.

Today I decided to tackle it again. This time I’ll make a decent paleo pancake. Same two ingredients as last time. New techniques. How did it turn out this time? Lets find out!
