Today I was going to review a prepper food item but that got preempted. I was talking with a friend yesterday and he gave me the idea to do this post instead. The question began with how I felt about activist Adam Kokesh. Which is a can of worms in itself. The reason being that he has fingers being pointed at him right now for the Vegas shooting. My response was this:
“Of course they are. That’s why I try not to watch or read any news. I’m interested in doing shit not blaming others”
I hardly ever watch or read any news for that reason. Some news is good to know, and if it is someone will tell me. Besides that I’m not interested and I’ll share with you now.
Circle Of Influence
I have been a fan of this concept long before I knew it had a name. In your life the things you have an ability of limited. For most people your circle of influence is fairly small. You can effect your friends, family and neighbors. Effecting change bigger than that takes exponentially more energy. Yet most spend their time worrying over things that they have small to no chance of effecting. I came to the conclusion in High School that I don’t care about anything that doesn’t directly effect me and that I can’t directly effect. If you spend all your time in those things you can’t change you will get less done in your own circle. Turn the news off and play catch with your kids or plant a vegetable garden.
Bricks
Some of you may recognize the term bricks from Paul Wheaton. I stole it. It is an all encompassing term for doing shit. Putting in some hugelkulture beds, building a home, getting livestock. Doing real things for a real psychical change. Protesting and bitching are not building bricks. Sometimes those activities get things done but mostly they are ignored and nothing changes. Deciding to get honey bees does have an effect. You get honey, pollinated plants and a better eco system. I only have time for bricks and those building bricks. If you want me to come hold a sign don’t hold your breathe it’s not happening. If you need help putting in trees, building a house or any other bricks I there!
Turn those Tv’s off and get busy with bricks! What bricks are you building? Let me know in the comments!

I need to read this more often – sometimes I forget… Thanks James your on point as always.
Very good post man. I don’t think I have ever heard one quite like it in the survival/prepper blogosphere. This was a very positive exercise for me. My bricks are as follows:
Being a dad and “working” on number 2 😉
cultivating a healthy marriage
nursing school. If all goes to plan, done in Dec. of this year and will be an RN.
Expanded my garden.
Increased my chicken flock.
Learning skills from my dad and life advice from my 91 y/o grandpa.
Getting to know and influencing my neighbors. One has chickens now because of me!
That is a really good tip especially to those fresh to the blogosphere.
Simple but very accurate info… Thank you for sharing this
one. A must read article!
