Today we welcome on Lucas Apps from the Triangle Tactical Blog and Podcast. Lucas Apps started the blog and podcast at triangletactical.net back in 2012. He’s an avid concealed carrier, competition shooter, and outdoors enthusiast. He has been shooting for as long as he can remember, and won his first competition at a young age shooting a .22lr standing rifle match with his Boy Scout troop. Lucas is an Eagle Scout, and learned the basics of shooting, and outdoor skills from his time in scouting.
We focus the first half of the show with Lucas Apps explaining how to get into tactical shooting. Things to expect on your first time out to a shoot. We talk about safety concerns. Like how you should never go to a match wearing your firearm loaded. I had a buddy get disqualified for that once. So make sure you are familiar with the rules of your range.
Weeding your garden may seem like a chore, but did you know that those weeds can offer a Backyard Bounty. Weeds are a fantastic addition to your diet. Those pesky dandelions can add some delicious notes to a salad! Plants like Miner’s lettuce, Purslane, and plantain are all just a few of the edible greens you may find springing up among your regularly-planted veggies, herbs, and fruits. The main topic this week is 10 C’s Of Survival How To Build The Best Kits. I came across Dave Canterburys system years ago. Besides some of the stretched names to follow the C pattern I love it. The 10 C’s Of survival streamlines the kit building process. Taking much of the guesswork out of building a kit. It will work for all kits from a mini kit to a Bug out Bag.
You know you need to hit the first five then move on. If your kit does not have these 10 Items then you need them before moving on. You should include more than the 10’s of Survival in your kit but you could survive with just them.
We dig into each of the 10 C’s and give examples of each. What has worked for us in our kits and what has not.
Mike and I go on to discuss where we diverge from Dave and the 10 C’s of survival. Dave is not big on first aid. He feels that duck tape should work till you make it to medical care. Mike and I both carry well stocked first aid kits. I don’t recommend everyone running out and getting suture kits. Having plenty of gauze and pads to stop bleeding is critical.

I may have over built this as it looks bomb proof. Finally building a backup battery bank. This is by far the most expensive and most important project in this book. I would not fault you for skipping to the end to do this one first.

Mini kits, Bug Out Altoids Tins, BOATS are the main topic of today’s show. Mike and I Talk about the philosophy on how we build our mini kits. Designing it to fit your personal needs is the way to go. Building a kit for the woods is different from a city. Some parts may work universally but others won’t.
I focus on the first 5 before moving on. They are the most important. In a mini Kit you could actually put all 10’cs in. However you have to sacrifice quality. The Altoids tin itself makes a decent container. You can boil water in it. I like to include a separate way to collect water as well. A roll up water flask or even a condom to collect water.
We mostly talk about building your own kit. Most the mini kits on the market are either cheap junk or really expensive. The deluxe kit I was talking about with the Blast Match, Starflash and other quality gear is on Amazon for $160! It’s a fucking mini kit not a Bug Out Bag. Yes get the best gear you can but not dipped in gold.
