Barter Items For SHTF

Today Mike and I talk about What are the best barter items for SHTF. We change up the format and dig deep into the main topic. No news this episode.

Also, there won’t be an All geared up with Couch Potato Mike this week. Since he was salty all episode long.

We disagree on the storage of Precious Metals. Mike says that it is a stand-in for money. I.e you are not bartering with gold and silver you are buying.

I stand behind using precious metals being a barter item. Bartering is between two people without a government needing to be involved.

We talk about many of the well-known barter items. The things that pop to mind easily. We also cover a few less talked about items.

Barter items basically come down to two categories. Needs and wants.

Early on in an SHTF scenario needs will be most important.  People will need food, gas, and medical supplies.

Once Things calm down, even a little, the wants will rule. During the great depression movie, theatres were filled. They had little to no money and still spent it on entertainment over needs. This is a valuable lesson.

Yes, you should stock up on needed items for barter. You should also store wants, vices, and addictions to barter with.

Alcohol, tobacco and titty mags will all have high barter value. The porn industry is not as big as it is without a reason.

3 Preps For The Election 2016 You Need To Get Done

Preps For The Election 2016

Today a new president is elected. I’m really pulling for my candidate. Nobody. Since that isn’t going to happen there are some preps for the election that need to be shored up.

Regardless of the outcome, some items are going to get more expensive. Or harder to find. As preppers, we should be prepping for this. Most of us have already got preps for the election. I like to prep right up to the last minute.

Today I’ll talk about a few items and strategies for Election 2016. I honestly don’t think much will happen. Each president of my lifetime has left the country worse and closer to the collapse. And the fear mongers are saying this is end times. They said the same about Obama and Fukushima and every other thing.

My point is that a collapse will occur. One day. No, I don’t think it will be overnight. Rome took between 100 to 300 years to fall. After an American collapse scholars in the Future will argue over how long it took the US to fall.

The Survival Rule Of 3’s Infographic

While looking for the Monday Infographic I came across the survival rule of 3’s infographic from Willow Haven Outdoors.

It is a short but sweet infographic. I realized I haven’t covered the basics of Survival in a few years. The survival rule of 3’s is a core tenet of survivalism.

The Rule of 3’s is:

  • 3 Hours without shelter.
  • 3 Day’s without water
  • Three  weeks without food

Those are the basic rules. Some have added more. Like 3 seconds without security, 3 minutes without air and three months without love. But we will stick to the 3 rules of 3’s.

3 Hours Without Shelter

This rule of 3’s rule is for 3 hours in extreme weather. Like all the rules it is an approximation. Obviously, you can survive just fine in the shade of a tree on an island paradise in perfect weather.

The problems come in with extreme conditions. Rain and cold weather come to mind first. There is also extreme heat and sun exposure. Basically, the further weather gets away from ideal conditions the faster you are going to need shelter.

3 Day’s without water

After shelter on the rule of 3’s water is next up in importance. Many worry about food first which is plain wrong. You can survive 3 days easily without food. 3 Weeks is a long time and many have gone longer.

Three days is a short time. So You need to get water fast. Focus on water before you think about food.

3 Weeks Without Food

Your last rule in the rule of 3’s is Food. The record for fasting is longer than three weeks but that doesn’t mean you can be a record setter.

After your shelter and water are squared away you have a 3-week window to get food. This seems like an easy task in 3 weeks but Naked and Afraid shows that it might not be.

Watch Your Back: A How To Guide To Better Situational Awareness

The book, Watch Your Back: How to Avoid the Most Dangerous Moments in Daily Life, is an amazing how-to guide to better situational awareness.

I was blown away by this book.  I have practiced situational awareness most of my life.  Always the guy you can’t sneak up on.

Moment catches my eye.  Odd noises attract my attention.  Hell, I can generally tell who is coming by the sounds they make or smell.

Watch your back by Roger Eckstine will take what you know about situational awareness to the next level.  Maybe several levels actually.
