Top 5 Survival Fiction Books | episode 247

Join me today as I discuss the Top 5 Survival fiction books.  This list could get updated soon as I haven’t read one in years. Moreover, now that I’m back podcasting I need to see what’s new.  I’m sure there have been some great novels since my departure.

There are lessons to learn from all the books listed today. Some are more overt than others. Patriots is a survival manual vaguely disguised as a novel. With that said I do have it as a guilty pleasure.

299 Days is a fantastic book series with only a few flaws. I personally feel like the first book could be drastically shortened. Or eliminated.  The story really takes off in book 2 on.

World War Z is an absolutely fantastic book, unlike the horrible movie.  They have little to do with each other. This one is better to read the audiobook. The narrator is not great.

One Second After is the quintessential survival fiction book. If you go online and ask for a recommendation for survival novels you will get one second after for good reason.

Prepping With Kids | episode 246

Join me today as I talk about prepping with kids. This episode is a long time coming. Before I never really felt like I could cover the topic properly. It’s hard to talk about something you don’t have any experience with. Now that I have children I can properly cover prepping with kids.

This might end up being a part of a series. With the shorter episodes, I cover less material, which is a huge topic.

I talk about including your children in your prepping activities. Kids want to emulate adults and love to be included. Recently I’ve been including my daughter in helping cook dinner every night. She loves to use her tiny kitchen knife to cut veggies.

There is also a lot of fun activities to do. One of my daughter’s favorite things to do is to go hiking. She’s been going since she was old enough to walk. Often when I’m off the next day I ask her what she wants to do and hiking is chosen as much as going to the park.

Power Options For Short Term Disasters | episode 245

Join me today to talk about Power Options For Short Term Disasters. And I do mean short term. The scope of this podcast does not cover TEOTWAWKT.

Also, there is no intro on today’s episode. The audio stopped after 7 minutes and I had to resume on the drive home. The first 7 minutes had bad audio so I threw it out.

Today we talk about power options for short term disasters. Think brownouts and power outages for a day or two at max. For this, we are mainly focused on phones, devices, the Internet, and refrigeration.

Power banks form the main bulk of the work for this with whole house battery backups being the big hitter. In the past I did an article on how to build a battery backup The only difference now would be I might recommend using a lithium battery over the marine one.

Lastly, as I said in the podcast your car is a generator. All you need is an inverter.

Spices For Your Long Term Storage | episode 244

Today we are talking about Spices For Your Long Term Storage.  This is the second part of my series of making your preps taste good. If you have just stored rice and beans without the means to prepare them you won’t be happy. I love rice and even I don’t want to eat a ton of plain white rice.

In the countries where they eat a lot of rice, they all have ways to make it taste better. Japan has a topping called Furikake ( ふりかけ) to spice things up.

The spices talked about today are Curry Powder, Cumin, Cinnamon, Chili Powder, Garlic Powder, Ginger, and Tumeric.  There are a lot more you can be storing and should be but you can do a lot with just those.

You could eat the same meal every day and use different combinations of these spices to make the meal completely different.

I cover the issue of flavor fatigue in this episode. I struggled with it badly on Canrivore and don’t want anyone to take it lightly.

Storing Sauces For Your Preps | episode 243

Today I’m going to discuss storing sauces for your preps. This might seem like an odd topic at first thought, but makes a lot of sense. Many of the foods that store long term, rice, beans, and pasta, are not very tasty by themselves. You need a way to help the flavor out. And storing sauces for your preps is one way to do that.

Your rice is going to get boring in a hurry without something to spice it up. With the addition of sauces and spices, your preps can give you an infinite amount of flavor.

I talk about many of the sauces that I use and love. With a combination of making your own sauces for your preps and buying them.

I like storing some single-serve ones like mayo so it doesn’t go bad without refrigeration. Many things like my favorite condiment, Mustard, do not require refrigeration.

Things like pasta sauce that you will use the whole jar for are fine to store.
